Most local jail questions start with the Marquette County Sheriff's Office and Marquette County Jail at the same Baraga Avenue complex. Sheriff Gregory S. Zyburt leads the office, Lowell A. Larson Jr. serves as undersheriff, and Brian H. Steede is the corrections captain. Before arraignment, jail staff may release only whether a person is lodged and the bond amount.

The jail service window is closed daily from 6:45 to 7:15 a.m., 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., and 4:45 to 5:15 p.m. Other closures may occur for safety or jail operations. For police reports other than accident reports, the sheriff requires a FOIA form and states requests are reviewed, approved, or denied within five working days.

Marquette County public-record requests can be started through the county FOIA page, the online FOIA form, or the sheriff forms page. Michigan FOIA begins at MCL 15.231, and FOIA fee rules are addressed in MCL 15.234. The sheriff fee schedule lists FOIA as case-dependent, accident or incident reports at $10, local records checks at $5, notary service at $5, and kennel inspections at $40.
